The BJP in its just released ‘Vision
Document 2004’ on Tuesday said that it would launch the highly controversial
river-linking project to divert waters from South Asia’s international
rivers to different regions in India.
The ruling party said in the document that it would deal with the
“challenge of water on a war-footing with a three-pronged approach” and the
river-linking would be a part of it.
Two other prongs detailed are [I] a massive encouragement to micro
initiatives like watershed management, checkdams, rainwater harvesting, drip
irrigation and [2] cleaning up of rivers and traditional water bodies.
The document said, “we remain fully committed to starting work on the
inter-linking of rivers, with due consideration for environment protection
and rehabilitation of displaced people.’
It also called for local initiatives for disilting of tanks, lakes and
reservoirs, restoration of wells, recharging natural aquifers, building of
check dams and promotion of drip irrigation, among other measures.
The inter-linking of the rivers would definitely affect adversely India’s neighbours in South Asia sharing the international rivers, said water
experts.
Within India itself various provinces remain opposed to the plan as do
many of its experts considering it to be more harmful than otherwise.
