News From
Indian News Paper ‘River
project inviting catastrophe’ The Statesman
Addressing a select
gathering here, the professor in the Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata,
raised opposition to the river-linking project stating that the project has
been conceptualised not to meet domestic water needs of the people but to
meet the demand for growing commercial agriculture activities. Quoting Prof Bharat Singh, a renowned engineer, he said there seemed to be no convincing argument or vital national interest that demanded formulation of the project. He elaborated that the technological aspect of the river-linking concept was based on the knowledge of the European rivers and not on the realities related to rivers in the country.
