[replace with] Pankho, The a tribe of
[replace with] chittagong hill tracts and considered a sub-branch of the Mongoloid race. In
[replace with] language and social lifestyle they have a lot of similarities with another
[replace with] tribe called Banajogi. Pankhos are short in height, have brown complexion,
[replace with] flat nose and small eyes. They live in the bandarban district of Chittagong
[replace with] Hills Tracts, but their original home was probably Burma (Myanmar). Having
[replace with] been driven out from there for some reason or the other several hundred
[replace with] years ago, they settled in this region.

[replace with] Socio Economic Aspects:
[replace with]
[replace with]
[replace with]
[replace with] Livelihood:
[replace with] Pankhos and Banajogis are farmers. The jhum system of farming is still
[replace with] widely practised by them. Pankhos produce rice and other crops. But they
[replace with] also do the work of procuring timber by felling trees in the forest. In all
[replace with] these works women take part equally with men. Women also do the marketing.
[replace with] Like Burmese and Assamese tribal women, Pankho women are hardworking and
[replace with] enjoy a special place in the family.

[replace with] Social System:
[replace with]
[replace with] Lifestyle: Rice is the staple
[replace with] food of Pankhos and wine is their main drink. Meat is their favourite dish.
[replace with] Although they eat the meat of goat, pig, dog, wild bull, wild fowl etc., the
[replace with] flesh of tiger or chitah is forbidden for them. Men wear a piece of cloth
[replace with] similar to the dhuti. Women wear a dress called pirhan, which is similar to
[replace with] the dress of chakma women. A separate piece of cloth is tied on the upper
[replace with] part of the body. These clothes are all woven at home.
[replace with]
[replace with] Family Structure: In the Pankho
[replace with] community, the father is the head of a family. After the father's death, his
[replace with] sons inherit his property and riches.
[replace with]
[replace with] Social Structure: The Pankho
[replace with] people are divided into two clans: Pankho and Bhanjang. Pankhos allow
[replace with] marriage between persons of different clans. After attainment of maturity
[replace with] young men and women are married with their parents' consent. The rules and
[replace with] rites of marriage are very similar to those of Kukis and Lusheis. Pankhos do
[replace with] not practise child marriage. Divorce and remarriage of widows are allowed.
[replace with]
[replace with] Languages: Pankhos have their
[replace with] own language, which is only spoken. The same is true about Banajogis also.
[replace with] There is much similarity between the spoken languages of the two tribes.
[replace with] There is no written form of their tongues. Nevertheless, there is no dearth
[replace with] of songs in their languages, especially love songs.
[replace with]
[replace with] Rituals: Pankhos claim to be
[replace with] Buddhists. But like many other aborigine people, they worship nature. The
[replace with] name of their Creator is Patyen, who resembles Puthian, the Creator of
[replace with] lusheis. There are many myths in the Pankho society about creation of the
[replace with] Universe. After the Creator, Patyen, the next most important god they
[replace with] worship is called Khojing, the Lord of the forest, who controls jhum
[replace with] farming. Consequently, most puja offerings and rites of austerity are
[replace with] dedicated to him. Tiger, the pet animal of Khojing, has a high place in the
[replace with] eyes of Pankhos. The tradition of holding a dancing ceremony at the
[replace with] beginning of Baisakh (April-May), the first month of the year is dedicated
[replace with] to Khojing. Pankhos believe that Khojing's place is in the deep forest. The
[replace with] main Khojing puja is held in Sraban (July- August). Khojing puja is
[replace with] considered the biggest festival of the Pankho community. Both Pankhos and
[replace with] Banajogis bury their dead. They have different styles of hair-dressing,
[replace with] which reveal their distinct identity. However, many believe that Pankhos and
[replace with] Banajogis are two branches of what was once one ethnic group.
[replace with]
[replace with] Culture: The unique culture of
[replace with] Pankhos and Banajogis has developed through a combination of their religious
[replace with] beliefs, social customs and ceremonies, pujas and festivals. Dance and songs
[replace with] have nourished their culture. They are accustomed to bamboo dance, flower
[replace with] dance and some other special kinds of dances and songs. [Ahmad Rafiq]
