International Day for Disaster Reduction today

The daily Independent

President Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed yesterday stressed the need for fruitful steps for remission of disasters, reports BSS.

In a message on the eve of the International Disaster Reduction Day', the President said extension of literacy and participation of all people, especially the youths in disaster reduction and prevention programmes can greatly help lessen the losses.

Justice Shahabuddin said lack of public awareness and inadequate preparedness were the main causes for the worst loss in a calamity.

He welcomed the move to observe the day and termed this year's slogan of the day as relevant and timely.

UNB says: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called upon the countrymen to stand beside the distressed people during the natural calamities to mitigate their sufferings.

"Timely and united efforts can save lives and property of the people during the natural disasters," said the Prime Minister in a message yesterday on the eve of the International Disaster Control Day today.

Referring to the current unexpected flooding in southwestern districts the Prime Minister said as in the past her government would tackle it successfully with the grace of almighty Allah.

She wished success of the programmes of the Day.

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan issued a message on the occasion of the International Day for Disaster Reduction, says a UNIC press release issued here yesterday.

The message says: "Our world is more vulnerable to hazards than ever before. The number of lives lost in disasters is rising steadily. The economic cost of disasters is rising even faster. Yet we, as a community of nations, remain relatively passive.

There is a growing awareness that what used to be called "natural" disasters are not so natural as they might appear. Indeed, the community of professionals dedicated to the reduction of disasters has now dropped the word "natural" altogether. That community's message is clear: the main cause of rising losses is human activity.
