& Agenda 21
Due to the efforts of UNFPA and others, population as an issue of importance to the environment and development was put on the agenda of the UNCED preparatory process at the third Preparatory Committee meeting in August 1991. From a population point of
view, the key element of Agenda 21 is Chapter 5, "Demographic
dynamics and sustainability." The activities and objectives proposed
in this chapter are in complete harmony with UNFPA’s mandate. In
addition, at least nine other chapters of Agenda 21 are at or near the
core of UNFPA’s concerns. These are, in order of appearance:
