  • Tourism and Poverty Alleviation
The World Tourism Organisation has produced this report as a synthesis of pro-poor tourism activity. It considers the economic impacts and benefits of tourism generally. These are illustrated with case studies showing successes from local partnerships, government policy and public-private partnerships. The organisation states that tourism can and should be developed with poverty alleviation in mind, and equally, that it should be considered as a primary development option, alongside other industries, by development banks and funding agencies. Challenges and steps to be taken in achieving poverty reduction through tourism are considered.
