ICT for Poverty Reduction.. |
|||||
|
Theme 2002 The theme this year is the role of information and communications technology (ICT) for poverty reduction, and it is worth reflecting on two important developments that are taking place in global thinking that are of relevance to both poverty reduction and ICT for development and to points of convergence between them. The first is the increase in awareness worldwide of poverty and the need to strengthen human security and development. At last year's United Nations Millennium Summit, an unprecedented 191 countries committed themselves to halving poverty by the year 2015 and in meeting related development targets as outlined in the Millennium Declaration. That poverty target can be met, but not without considerable concerted and intensified efforts. We will need to bring all the innovative resources at our disposal to bear on addressing these international development goals, so as not only to do more for poverty reduction but to increase the effectiveness and reach of current national development plans, poverty reduction strategies and development cooperation. |
