World Environment
Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in
1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human
Environment. Another resolution, adopted by the General Assembly the same
day, led to the creation of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
World Environment Day is commemorated each
year on 5 June. It is one of the principal vehicles through which the
United Nations stimulates world wide awareness of the environment and
enhances political attention and action. World Environment Day is also A
multi-media event which inspires thousands of journalists to write and
report enthusiastically and critically on the environment. |

World Environment
Day National Programme
World Environment Day is going to be observed in
Bangladesh along with other nations of the world on 5th June, 2001. In
observance of the day, The Ministry of Environment and Forest and the Department
of Environment have undertaken an elaborate programme.
A special programme has been oganised at Paribesh
Bhaban (Environment House) on Monday 4 th June 2001.
Sheikh Hasina, Hon'ble Prime Minister, Government of the People's
Republic of Bangladesh will inaugurate the World Environment Day 2001
celebration at Paribesh Bhavan.
Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Hon'ble Minister, Ministry of Environment and
Forest, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh will be the Special
guest at the occation.
Mr. H. N. Ashequr Rahman, Hon'ble State Minister, Ministry of Environment
and Forest, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh will be the
special speaker while H. E. Mr. Jorgen Lissner, Resident Representative
of UNDP in Bangladesh will attend the function as the guest of honour.
The other programs of
the day include
- Colorful rally and walkathon.
- Children's painting competition.
- Day- long Environment fair and cultural programme.
- Publication of poster highlighting this year's theme
"CONNECT with the World Wide Web of Life".
- Publication of special supplements in national
newspapers.
- Decoration of street islands with banners,
festoons, etc.
- Publication of souvenirs.
- Seminar.
- Special programme on national radio and television.
Special Programme of SDNP, Bangladesh
- SDNP, Bangladesh shall take part in the national
programme in rally and Environement Fair. In addition it will run, in
collaboration with the National Press Club, an Information Corner at Club
premises. The corner will be formally opened on June 6, 2001 by Professor
Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Chair Person, Steering Committee of SDNP Bangladesh
and ex-Advisor for Science and Technology in the Second Interim Government.
- A CD ROM containing Sustainable Development Information
will be released by SDNP Bangladesh on the same day.
