From Grim City to Green City: PWD
The Public works Department has highly qualified and experienced professionals forming a multi-disciplinary team of civil, electrical and mechanical engineers who work alongside architects from the Department of Architectur. As a sister organization falling under the administrative control of the Ministry of Housing & Public Works, the latter works well

with the PWD in providing service to the nation. With its strong base of standards and professionalism developed over the years, the PWD is the repository of expertise and hence the first choices among discerning clients for any type of construction project in Bangladesh. It is recognized as a leader and pacesetter in the construction industry because of its consistently superior performance.

For the PWD, functional and aesthetic quality, application of appropriate tecnology and local materials, cost effectiveness and user satisfaction get paramount importance. A vigorous programme of quality assurance, quality control and technical audit feeds into the range of the PWD's activities.

The Department aims at Total Quality Management through a system of modernization and human resource development.

Over the years, the PWD has gained invaluable experience in a wide range of fields. It has an excellent trackrecord for quality, cost effectiveness and speed. Well-documented standards, specifications, scedule of rates, design practices, costing systems, the application of procedures which ensure proper utilization of public funds and total accountability are all embodiments of the department.

The Government recognizes and emphasizes the importance of harmonizing management with environmental protection in all sectors of the economy. As part of Government policy :

" It is made imperative to adopt an integrated environment policy based on priorities because of specific geografical location of Bangladesh, the gradual degradation of its environment, lack of appropriate technology and sustainable management technique and processes for exploitation of resources."
The PWD is keen on environment protection for settlements, neighbourhood planning & open spaces. Special emphasis has been given to the planting of trees in all protect areas and the construction and conservation of lakes and ponds. Priority has also been given to the preservation of buildings and monuments, structures of architectural value and the preservation of special natural features.

With its existing facilities and expertise, the PWD takes all measures to protect Government interests regarding the environment by taking the following steps :

  1. To integrate environmental considerations into housing and urban planning activities.
  2. To work in phases in gradually extending environmentally sound amenities to all existing urban and rural housing areas.
  3. To monitor and control housing and urban development schemes that may have an adverse impact on the local and overall natural environment.
To accord greater importance to water bodies for their part in maintaining ecological balance and beautifying urban areas.
