"Gender Equality & the
Millennium Development Goals-the theme of International Women's Day this
year" International Women’s Day, which is observed worldwide on 8 th March every year, will be commemorated this year on Friday, 7 March 2003. This year’s theme is “Gender Equality and the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)”. For this important event, UNESCAP and the inter-agency Thematic Working Group on Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality (TWG-WEGE) will organize an opening session, including an exhibition on the theme by local women’s groups and the United Nations agencies. There will also be a performance by a local women’s theater group. There will be a substantive panel discussion on the theme, and a prominent speaker from Thai community will deliver a keynote speech. This year, the Day’s event is open to the public and a wide range of people from the outside UN are invited to participate in the opening ceremony, which will take place on 7 March 2003 in the Ground Floor Open Space at the United Nations Conference Center from 9.00 a.m., as well as to stay on for the Day’s events. Mr. Kim Hak-Su, the Executive Secretary of UNESCAP, and a representative from UNDP Bangkok will open the Day.
