The eleventh Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the first Conference of Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (COP/MOP 1) opened in Montreal on Monday morning, 28 November.

On Saturday, delegates convened in contact groups and informal consultations on numerous issues, including Protocol Article 3.9 (future commitments), the CDM Executive Board's report, joint implementation, the financial mechanism, technology transfer, capacity building under the Kyoto Protocol, research and systematic observation, non-Annex I communications, the Kyoto Protocol's international transaction log, compliance, the IPCC Special Report on carbon dioxide capture and storage, and privileges and immunities for those serving on bodies established under the Kyoto Protocol. Above: outside the conference center, thousands of people marched through downtown Montreal, demanding action on climate change.
