- KlimaHaus
- Living in a plus
A climate-friendly initiative
of energy efficient buildings,
presented by the Province
of Bolzano, Italy. The success
of KlimaHaus is based on a
clear and simple certificate
for home-owners concerning
different levels of energy
efficiency (A, B or C) and
on applying a KlimaHaus plaque
to the buildings. The winning
formula consists also in offering
home-owners training as well
as providing architects and
artisans to build energy saving
buildings and providing services
and products available for
the construction of buildings
with proper thermal insulating.

- How
climate benefits from space
ESA builds satellites that
monitor the Earth’s
health. Satellite data are
provided to scientists worldwide
and transformed into useful
information for governments
and other public institutions
to the benefit of our Environment,
and to our Climate in particular.

Industrial
CO2 capture using a natural
process
Huge amounts of CO2 will
have to be captured from
industrial plants at the
lowest possible cost. CO2
Solution Inc. presents a
powerful bio-catalyst, similar
to a human enzyme, to efficiently
capture CO2 in the industrial
environment.

Used
wood is carbon rich
When disasters occur in
the world, relief crews
fly in, remove debris and
build new infrastructure.
This project looks at one
component - wood. During
renovation of my century
home in Hamilton, Ontario,
Canada, the old wood originally
destined for the landfill
is being re-milled and reused.
A climate -friendly opportunity.

Taking
action on climate change:
Ramsar Convention on Wetlands
The Convention on Wetlands
is an intergovernmental
treaty which provides the
framework for national action
and international cooperation
for the conservation and
wise use of wetlands and
their resources.

Peatland
management to address climate
change, biodiversity and
community livelihoods
Peatlands are a key wetland
ecosystem which is found
in many countries around
the world. They cover 400
million ha worldwide and
store 20-30% of all terrestrial
carbon. Degradation of peatlands
generates major carbon emissions
as well as impacting biodiversity
and community livelihoods.
The presentation will describe
clear measures which are
being taken to restore and
manage peatlands in a way
to minimise emissions, maintain
storage as well as enhance
values for biodiversity.

- Social
marketing approach for stakeholder
adaptation to climate change
Stakeholder segmentation,
capacity gaps, specially designed
products for key stakeholder
groups, surveys that help
to identify what stakeholders
know, how they feel and how
they behave towards climate
change and its links to biodiversity,
desertification and ozone
depletion, are all part of
an innovative approach to
public education and outreach
for adaptation to climate
change.

- Climate proofing
the Netherlands
Regional climate change should
not be seen only as a threat-
it will generate new opportunities
for large-scale innovations
by institutions and across
sectors.

- Experience in the
implementation of UNFCCC Article
6 in Turkey
Turkey became a party to the
UNFCCC on 24 May 2004. REC
Turkey was established in
2004 as the newest country
office of Regional Environmental
Center for Central and Eastern
Europe. As of May 2005, the
Ministry of Environment and
Forestry of Turkey designated
REC Turkey as the Turkish
National Focal Point for UNFCCC
Article 6 – Education,
Training and Public Awareness.
The presentation will cover
brief experience and lessons
learned from the initial phase
of the implementation of this
task within the scope of a
commitment of the UNFCCC.

conservation can contribute
to climate change adaptation
and mitigation activities.

- Climate Insurance
Record losses from weather-related
disasters in 2005 put climate
insurance on the international
agenda at this year’s
global warming conference
in Montreal. Countries worldwide
seek solutions to the rapidly
multiplying impacts of climate
change. The decisive question
today is not when we will
have the ultimate proof for
anthropogenic climate change--a
small degree of uncertainty
will remain for some time--but
which strategies to follow
to mitigate and adapt to climate
change. Insurance-related
mechanisms can be an effective
part of adaptation strategies.
The talk will highlight the
major issues, opportunities
and challenges, and concrete
next steps for using insurance-related
mechanisms to manage climate
risks.

- Chicago Climate
Exchange
The world’s first, legally
binding multi-sectoral, rule-based
and integrated greenhouse
gas emission registry, reduction
and trading system. CCX employs
independent verification (performed
by the NASD, the leading financial
regulator in the United States),
includes all six greenhouse
gases, and has been trading
greenhouse gas emission allowances
since 2003.
