A three-day international
workshop titled 'Capacity Building for Preparation of National
Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPA)' begins in the city today to
adopt strategies aiming to combat climate change.
The representatives from
46 countries will take part in the workshop to be held under the
programme of United Nations Framework Convention.
Announcing the programme
at a press conference yesterday, Minister for Environment and Forest
Shajahan Siraj said the sea-level rise poses a serious threat to the
people across the globe, especially those living in the least
developed countries situated in the delta belt.
He said the sea level
rise will cause inundation of 17 per cent of land in the country,
leading to devastating ecological disaster, if no measures are taken
to plan for this phenomenon.
The minister said the LDC
Expert Group has designed an action plan as part of its two-year work
programme for framing adaptation strategies. As part of the plan,
Bangladesh is hosting the workshop, he added.
Representatives from
different international agencies, including CIDA, DFID, GEF, World
Bank, UNDP, UNEP and the UNITAR, will also attend the workshop. |
