Torrential rain yesterday submerged roads, lanes and by-lanes and low-lying areas of the city, disrupting normal life, reports UNB.

Rainwater remained stagnant on some of the city roads even hours after the heavy shower, as it could not pass through the clogged drains of the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC).

City areas like Motijheel, Shantinagar, Kakrail, parts of Dhanmondi, Green Road, old part of Dhaka, Mymensingh Road near the Prime Minister's office were submerged creating a chaotic traffic congestion.

Traffic came to a halt as many cars, auto-rickshaws and other vehicles were inoperative after water entered their exhaust pipes and engines. Office-goers and school-going children were the worst sufferers.

Met office recorded 122mm rainfall in the city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar points during last 30 hours till yesterday noon. During 6 am-12 pm, the rainfall was recorded at 51 mm.

Being caught in the rain that came in torrents during the office and school time, commuters suffered much in reaching their destinations.

While passing through Dhanmondi Road-27 where many kindergartens are situated, one Razimuddin witnessed miseries of the guardians whose car wheels almost dipped into rainwater.

The nagging waterlogging made the city life miserable but no one bothered, said Farzana who went to drop her children at a school at Dhanmondi.

The City Corporation’s Drainage Department, however, held responsible the dumping of polythene bags and other waste in the drains for stagnation of rainwater on the streets even after completion of storm sewerage.

The piling of construction materials on roads and drains added to the sufferings of the people in many areas of the city.

Rabiul Ahmed of Rampura said that dirty water from sewerage mixed with rainwater entered his house due to lack of drainage facility. "However, I had removed valuables earlier considering my previous experience," he said.
