Total Number: 20 ratifications of the Amendment to the Basel Convention

In accordance with article 17 of the Convention, the Amendment has to be ratified by three fourths of the Parties present at the time of the adoption of the amendment (62 Parties) in order to enter into force.


(1) The Convention, of which the Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish texts are equally authentic, was adopted on 22 March 1989 by the Conference of Plenipotentiaries which was convened at Basel from 20 to 22 March 1989. The Depositary of the Convention is the Secretary General of the United Nations.

(2) Germany could not accept the Amendment within the six-month time limit set out in the Convention.

(3) With respect for the application to the Faroe Islands.

(4) In respect of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the British Antarctic Territory.

(5) The European Community has enacted legislation transposing the ban amendment which is binding for all fifteen Member States, i.e. Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
